FAQ

What is the purpose of publishing your portfolio on this site?

I wanted to counter one of the most pervasive problems when talking to people about what stocks they own: they don’t put their mouth where their money is (yes, you read that correctly). People have a tendency to only talk about the stocks they picked which were successes, while keeping their mistakes secret. This tendency has two issues. First, it gives people the false sense that they are below average investors. Second, it encourages people to take excessive risks and attempt to time the market, which usually leads to bad outcomes, thus reinforcing the false notion that they are below average investors. Consequently, I publish all of my holdings so that everyone can see both my successes and my mistakes.

Why do you not include some information (e.g., quantity of shares purchased, average cost basis) in this information?

First, because including this information would reveal how much money I have in my brokerage account. Second, because the Stockdio widget that I use on this site does not allow me to include that information. I may include more information (especially the average cost basis of my shares, and potentially the relative percent allocation for each stock) in the future, if an alternative widget allows for this information.

Does the current performance include any other assets besides the stocks listed above?

Yes, my brokerage account includes other types of assets, including bonds, options, and cash. There are two reasons why I don’t include this information. First, and most importantly, my brokerage account is calibrated for my particular investment goals and time horizons, which almost certainly would not align with yours. The purpose of this blog is not to present a specific portfolio to emulate; it is to show which stocks I personally believe are good long-term investments. Second, the Stockdio widget that I use on this site does not have the capability to include these other investment vehicles.

Why include your current performance if your portfolio includes assets not shown on the site?

The purpose is so that I have nothing to hide behind. If my portfolio lags one or both of the benchmark indices shown in the table, potentially revealing that my investment strategy is not working, then I will not be able to pretend that my skills are better than they really are. Ideally, if my entire portfolio performs as I have planned, the results should fall somewhere between the S&P 500 and Index 60/40 performance.
